How to Change Your Facebook Password (Phone & Desktop)

Quick answer: To change your Facebook password, open Settings & privacy → Settings → Accounts Center → Password and security → Change password, pick your account, enter your current password, then type and confirm a new one. On a phone it’s the same path inside the Facebook app. If you’ve forgotten your current password, use Forgot password? on the login screen instead. Tested on the Facebook app and facebook.com, July 2026.

Facebook moved password settings into Accounts Center (the hub that manages your Facebook, Instagram and Meta login). The old “Security and Login” menu is gone, so if an older guide sent you there, use the steps below instead.

Change your Facebook password on the phone app (iPhone & Android)

  1. Tap your profile photo (or the menu icon — three lines).
  2. Tap Settings & privacy, then Settings.
  3. Tap Accounts Center near the top, then Password and security.
  4. Tap Change password and choose the account you want to update.
  5. Enter your current password, type a new password twice, then tap Change password.

Change your password on a computer (facebook.com)

  1. Click your profile photo in the top right, then Settings & privacy → Settings.
  2. Click Accounts Center in the top left.
  3. Click Password and security, then Change password.
  4. Pick your account, enter your current and new password, and click Change password.

Use at least 8 characters with a mix of letters, numbers and symbols, and don’t reuse a password from another site. Changing your password logs you out everywhere except the device you’re on — handy if you think someone else is signed in.

Forgot your password? Reset it without logging in

If you can’t sign in, you don’t need your old password:

  1. On the login screen, tap Forgotten password? (or go to facebook.com/login/identify).
  2. Enter the email or phone number on your account and search for it.
  3. Choose to get a code by text or email, enter the code, then set a new password.

Can’t get the code? If you’ve lost your email or phone

If the email address or phone number on the account is one you no longer control, open facebook.com/login/identify on a browser you’ve used for Facebook before and follow the recovery prompts — a familiar device or browser makes Facebook more likely to let you back in. If you still have access to the linked email, recover that email account first (through your email provider), then reset your Facebook password to it.

Troubleshooting

  • No “Accounts Center” in your menu? Update the app, or in Settings use the search bar at the top and type “password” — it jumps straight to the setting.
  • “Password incorrect” when you’re sure it’s right? Check Caps Lock, and remember passwords are case-sensitive. If it still fails, use Forgot password?.
  • Didn’t get the reset code? Check spam, wait a couple of minutes, then request it again. Codes expire, so use the newest one.

FAQ

Do I need my old password to change it? Only if you’re logged in. If you’re locked out, use Forgot password? and reset with an emailed or texted code.

Will changing my password log me out of Messenger? Yes — you’ll need to sign back in on Messenger and any other device, which is exactly what you want if someone had access.

How often should I change it? There’s no need to change a strong, unique password on a schedule. Change it right away if you spot logins you don’t recognize or reused it somewhere that was breached.

This is not so easy on a mobile phone. There is no drop down box on right. I have been hacked & need to change password.
