Quick answer: The fastest way to find an archived Messenger chat is to search the person’s name in the Chats search bar — archived chats show up in search on both the app and the web. To see the full list, open Messenger → your profile photo → Archived chats (app) or, on a computer, the ⋯ menu next to Chats → Archived chats. Archiving only hides a chat; nothing is deleted. Tested on the Messenger app and messenger.com, July 2026.
Archiving a conversation hides it from your inbox until the next time you chat with that person — the messages are still there, just tucked away. Here’s how to get them back on every device.
Find archived messages on the phone (iPhone & Android)
Quickest — search:
- Open Messenger (or the Chats tab in the Facebook app).
- Tap the search bar at the top and type the person’s or group’s name.
- Tap the chat when it appears — it opens right where you left off.
See the whole archived list:
- Tap your profile photo in the top-left of Messenger.
- Scroll down and tap Archived chats to see everything you’ve archived.
Find archived messages on a computer
- Go to messenger.com (or click the Messenger icon on facebook.com).
- Click the ⋯ More icon (three dots) next to the Chats heading.
- Click Archived chats to see the full list — or just type the name in the search bar to jump straight to one.
How to unarchive a chat
An archived chat comes back to your inbox the moment you send a new message in it. To move it back without messaging:
- Phone: press and hold the chat in Archived chats, then tap Unarchive.
- Computer: hover over the chat, click the ⋯, then Unarchive chat.
Archived vs deleted — the difference
Archived = hidden but safe; you can bring it back anytime, and you’ll still receive new messages in it (just without a notification on the main screen). Deleted = gone from your side for good. If you can’t find a conversation anywhere, including in search, it was likely deleted rather than archived, and it can’t be recovered from Messenger.
Troubleshooting
- No “Archived chats” in your menu? Use search instead — typing the name always surfaces an archived chat, whatever version of Messenger you have.
- Chat isn’t in search either? Check you’re logged into the right account, then consider that it may have been deleted (not archived).
- It keeps disappearing? Opening an archived chat doesn’t unarchive it — you have to send a message or use Unarchive.
FAQ
Does archiving delete my messages? No. Archiving only hides the conversation. Everything stays until you delete it.
Can someone still message me in an archived chat? Yes — new messages still arrive, but you won’t get a notification and the chat stays off your main list until you open or unarchive it.
Will the other person know I archived our chat? No. Archiving is private and only affects your own inbox.
