Quick answer: To unlink Facebook and Instagram, open Accounts Center (called Meta Account on some phones now), tap Accounts, then tap Remove next to the account you want to separate and confirm. Both accounts stay active; they just stop sharing logins, cross-posts and settings. Set a separate Instagram password first so you don’t get locked out.
You can do this from either app or from a computer. The result is the same, so pick whichever you have open. Steps checked against Meta’s Help Center in October 2026.
Before you unlink: set an Instagram password
If you’ve been signing in to Instagram with your Facebook login, unlinking ends that. Once the accounts are separate, you can’t log in to one using the other. So check you know your Instagram password first:
- In Instagram, open Accounts Center (steps below).
- Tap Password and security, then Change password.
- If Instagram doesn’t have its own password yet, it lets you create one here. Save it somewhere safe.

- Tap Accounts.
- Tap Remove next to your Facebook account (or tap the account, then Remove from Accounts Center).

Accounts Center or Meta Account: which do you have?
Meta started replacing Accounts Center with Meta Account in April 2026, and it’s rolling out gradually over about a year. Some people see one name, some see the other. The unlink option works the same way in both: look for Accounts (or Manage accounts) and then Remove. Meta says you can keep separate Meta Accounts for different apps, so you’re never forced to keep Facebook and Instagram together.
What happens after you unlink
- Both accounts stay. Nothing is deleted or deactivated. Your posts, followers and friends don’t change.
- Separate logins. You sign in to each app with its own password.
- Cross-posting stops. Stories and posts no longer share to the other app automatically.
- Less shared data. Settings and profile details stop syncing between the two.
- The removed account leaves with its profiles. Meta notes that removing an account from Accounts Center also removes any profiles attached to that account.
Changed your mind later? You can add the account back from the same Accounts screen with Add accounts.
Unlinking a Facebook Page from an Instagram business account
A business or creator Instagram connected to a Facebook Page is a separate link from your personal Accounts Center. To break that one, open the Page on facebook.com, go to the Page’s Settings, then Linked accounts (older layouts show Instagram), and choose Disconnect. Meta moves this menu around, so if you don’t see it, search the Page settings for “Instagram”. If you run ads or a shop across both, disconnecting can affect them, so check your Meta Business Suite setup first.
If the Remove button isn’t there
- You’re on the wrong account. Open Accounts Center from the account you want to keep, then remove the other one.
- It’s the only account left. You can’t remove the last account in an Accounts Center. If there are just two, removing either one separates them.
- A Page or business link is in the way. Business and Meta Verified users may need to disconnect the Facebook Page link (section above) first.
- Old app version. Update Facebook and Instagram, then try again, or use a computer.
FAQ
Does unlinking Facebook and Instagram delete anything?
No. Both accounts stay exactly as they are. Unlinking only stops them sharing logins, cross-posts and settings.
Will my Facebook friends find out?
No. Nobody is notified when you remove an account from Accounts Center.
Can I stop cross-posting without unlinking?
Yes. In Accounts Center, open Connected experiences → Sharing across profiles, pick the account to share from and to, and switch off posts, stories and reels. Each one has its own switch, so turn off all three. The accounts stay linked, but nothing shares on its own.
How do I log in to Instagram after unlinking?
Use your Instagram username, email or phone number with your Instagram password. If you never set one, tap Forgot password? on the Instagram login screen to create one. For more on signing in, see Instagram login with Facebook.
Is unlinking the same as deleting my Facebook account?
No. If you want Facebook gone completely, see how to permanently delete your Facebook account. If you just want a break, deactivating hides your profile and keeps everything.
